Satie: Gymnopédie No. 1

I am continually looking for more music that is not terribly difficult that students can master in a week or two. If the music is also famous and sounds really beautiful it will be extremely pleasant to play and very satisfying to work on. I edited this music years ago and set it up to teach, but somehow I just never got around to playing it in a way that satisfied me.

It is one of the most famous pieces of music ever written for piano and has also been transcribed for many musical groups.

The fact that I had never finished it as a performance left a lingering irritation, so I finally took the time to study properly and record it.Tonight all I needed to complete the video was a set of pictures, because the recording was already done. I got the idea for the visuals from watching a couple a videos about relaxation and meditation. It seemed the right mood for this music, which has nothing agitated or tense about it.

  1. I used to hear this as the intro to a PBS nature show, “Audobon” pops up in memory. Thank you for turning this into expressive music and bringing it past the ‘pretty music’ I used to hear as a heron flew off.
