John Williams: Imperial March

The name of Darth Vader’s official theme is the “Imperial March”, but I usually simply refer to it as the “Darth Vader Theme”.Here is how I wrote this arrangement. The introduction starts in the key of D# minor, but the theme is in G minor. I use the trinity of minor chords to move between D sharp minor, B minor and G minor.

I use a fanfare to modulate from one key to the other for the restatements of the main theme.

I then finish with something chromatic going down, then finally big chromatic chords returning back up. Anyone who knows me also knows that I love the music of John Williams, the greatest film composer of our time and perhaps the best film composer who has ever lived. Who doesn’t know the music from Star Wars? Even people who don’t like science fiction and many love it.

John Williams is an absolutely brilliant orchestrator, and what he does with a complete orchestra is amazing beyond belief.

However, trying to adapt his music for solo piano is extremely difficult, so I’m not sure if I managed to get the full effect of the the theme in a way that can be realized only two hands. Nevertheless it was great fun transcribing this theme and then playing it. There is no need to explain why I picked the pictures I chose for this video because we all know who Darth Vader is.
