Superman was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster and debuted in the Action Comics in 1938. And the rest is history. By the time I was born, everyone in the United states knew about Superman, and by the early 1950s a very successful TV show premiered called “The Adventures of Superman” starring George Reeves. Phyllis Coates played Lois lane in 1951.
In the second year of the TV series, Noel Neill replaced her as Lois lane.
You can see her together with George Reeves in the photos I found tonight. Many years later, in 19 78, Margot kidder starred as Lois Lane in the first blockbuster Superman film. “Can You Read My Mind” first happens on her balcony when she gets to interview Superman. It is dynamically linked with the flying scene which happens as they take off from now up to me.
I started my arrangement shortly after the debut of the Superman film.
But I never recorded it until 2022 because it was too hard to play. I had to reshape it and change many things to make it work. It starts off with the Krypton theme before getting to the main theme, “Can You Read My Mind”. I wove in the Krypton theme here and there as a contrast to the main theme. Although I wrote this decades ago i was already using the same kind of modulations and variations that I use at present. However, I had not yet started teaching what I do to other people in the hope that they will themselves become composers and arrangers.
This was a really relaxing piece to listen to. It was kind of long but I listened to the whole thing. 🙂
While I haven’t once seen a Superman film, the piece still feels like it has the grandiose, movie-like feel to it. It’s like the end of an adventure, the end of something great. It’s slow, but it has some twists and turns that really shows what a wacky journey it has been up to this point. Up to this point in time, up to 2022.
I do like this. For some reason the intro attracted me especially.
This is not the usual Maureen McGovern version. I am thinking more of a variation on a theme by John Williams. Gary, you have worked your magic once again.
This has been a favorite of mine since the movie came out. This is a beautiful arrangement, you captured the feel of the movie in it – vast, grand, yet still small and intimate. That whole big film really boiled down to Lois and Clark… or Lois and Superman.
