Grieg’s “French Serenade”, Op. 62 No. 03, is yet another short composition from his lyrical pieces. I’m not sure why this is a serenade, or why it is French. But I think it it a rather charming little piece and I enjoyed playing it. It really only has one important theme that is in the tonic key of A major and ends in a dominant key of E major.
Then the whole thing repeats.

The second section starts with a bridge that provides a bit of diversity before returning to the main theme again. This time the main theme moves to the subdominant key of D major which allows the coda now to be in the tonic key of A major. The second section is repeated and ends with a slightly longer coda.
This is a delightful little piece, however, I would prefer slower more romantic music for a serenade.
