Chopin: Nocturne in Eb

This was the first piece of music I ever performed for an audience. I was 12 years old. At that time I was fearless, so I did not know how tricky this is to play. It is perhaps the most famous of Chopin’s nocturnes. There are two primary sections. The first we could simply call the main theme just second is kind of like a bridge.

The main theme is presented simply and then it is repeated with a bit of ornamentation.

The bridge is next followed by the main theme with even more ornamentation. The bridge comes again slightly altered and is followed by the main theme one more time with additional ornamentation. A long improvisatory section follows ending with a very dramatic buildup. There is a cadenza way up high in the right hand which finally winds down to something very soft and gentle.

Then there is a tiny little coda consisting of only one chord.
