Chopin: Minute Waltz

It’s not played in a minute. The title would be about “small”, as in “minute waltz” (small waltz), and even virtuosos can’t do it in a minute. In my view most people totally ruin the piece by making it a race. It should just be “lively”, a bit too fast to actually waltz to, but it has to be charming.

The rest of the story:

If you hear this and picture someone dancing, it’s well played. The version I just recorded is not the normal Chopin score but what Rachmaninov did, so what I”m playing is a transcription. I used a number of small changes that Rachmaninov used, which include much slower grace notes in the center section and a few extra notes.

His recording is more elegant and more charming than any other I’ve heard.

No played like Rachmaninov, no one plays like him today and no one will ever do so in the future. Listening to him you hear that he was not only a fantastic player but you can also hear his unique vision as one of the best composers in history.
