Mr. Peabody Says:
This is another early symphony with no trumpets, flutes, clarinets and no timpani. It’s not true that none of these early symphonies can be fun without those instruments, but they add a lot. There is nothing particularly different or new in this symphony. For just a taste of this listen to the last movement: Allegro.
Adam Fischer:
- 4:15 Allegro molto
- 3:39 Andante in D major
- 3:40 Menuetto e Trio: Allegretto, with the Trio in A minor
- 3:29 Allegro
Total time: 15 minutes
Instruments:
- 2 oboes
- bassoon
- 2 horns
- strings
- continuo
The name:
The Andante was originally the finale of an early divertimento, “The Birthday”. But good luck finding out when he wrote this divertimento, so estimates for the writing of this symphony are horribly vague. 1761 appears to be nothing more than a guess due to lack of info.
