1774: Haydn: Symphony No. 64 in A major (Tempora mutantur), age 42

Hogwood:

Date:

Again, it is vexing, because the best info I can find says “between 1773 and 1775”, so I just picked 1774, but the importance is that 1774 is when Mozart turned 18, so anything he heard at this time becomes extremely important.

Nickmame:

Tempora mutantur, nos et mutamur in illis.

The times change, and we change with them.

Just what this means in this music is endlessly debated, but purely from a musical perspective there are constant interruptions in the slow movement, which could be about time changes, or playing with time. Regardless, the 2nd movement is wonderful.

Instruments:

  • two oboes
  • two horns
  • strings

 Movements:

  1. Allegro con spirito
  2. Largo
  3. Menuetto and Trio: Allegretto
  4. Finale: Presto
