1774: Haydn: Symphony No. 54 in G major (TRIPLE VERSION), Hob. I/54, age 42

Three Versions:

The symphony exists in 3 versions. The first version is scored for 2 oboes, bassoon, 2 horns, and strings. Subsequently, the second version included a second bassoon part and a timpani part. Haydn may have added flute and trumpet parts for a third version performed in London.

Hogwood, version two

So far I have not found a recording with version three, which would be my preference. If Haydn really did prepare the 3rd version for London, that’s the one I would like to hear.

Instrumentation:

  • 2 flutes
  • 2 oboes
  • 2 bassoons
  • 2 horns
  • 2 trumpets
  • timpani
  • strings

Movements:

  1. Adagio maestoso – Presto
  2. Adagio assai
  3. Menuet and trio: Allegretto
  4. Finale: Presto
