1767: Haydn: Symphony No. 58 in F major, age 35

Adam Fischer:

Instruments:

  • two oboes
  • two horns
  • strings

Alla zoppa:

The unique distinction alla zoppa on the Menuet literally means “ in syncopated style” which Haydn accomplishes with a dotted rhythm pushed into all sorts of asymmetrical patterns.

Symphony of the Dance:

The character of the first movement is very reminiscent of a minuet. The whole symphony features four movements that are dance-like in nature.
