I love Streisand’s singing and voice. I love My Favourite Things which has a special place for me. But the meaning of the song is changed for me in this rendition. Frankly, at this time I need some uplifting, and that was the sense of the original with Andrews: children being guided into thinking of favourite things to get out of the doldrums. Streisand’s version is more like an adult’s sad nostalgia and feels almost like futility. When it’s not the day before Christmas during a pandemic and isolation from family and away from some “favourite things” – I may listen to the rest of it. Right now it’s too close to home.
