1726: Bach: Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor

WEDNESDAY, November 25, 2020 – 10:07 AM

Orchestral Suite No 1 in B minor, age 41

Instrumentation:

  • Oboe I/II, bassoon
  • violin I/II, viola
  • basso continuo

Shunkse Sato

This one is Bb minor, a key Bach would never have written, which is why it’s really in B minor, on the page. But it’s played down 1/2 step, to conform to modern assumptions of pitch in the time of Bach. Once again I love the sound these guys make, and Sato conducts with his head, bow and eyes.

Movements

  • Ouverture
  • Rondeaux by Bach
  • Sarabande
  • Bourrée I/II
  • Polonaise
  • Menuet
  • Badinerie

  1. What amazes me about how Sato conducts is that he does it mostly with a glance. There are times when the strings make a particularly tasty sound, you’ll see him look at 3 or 4 people in the strings and they all smile or grin — in this, or any of their performances. Look for it. They’re so finely-woven as a group words or gestures are superfluous.
