Joshua Grullón & Tyler Haynes

I love guitar, and the sound of electric guitar is so powerful. But this is personal. It’s a dark song, and right now it feels to me as if the whole world has turned into one big sanatorium.

A sanatorium, sanitarium, sanitorium

It was most typically associated with the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century before the discovery of antibiotics. Well, here we are again with another scourge that has as of yet no cure.

He’s the son of Byron Haynes who used to teach guitar in a room right next to mine. Byron’s life was suddenly cut short by Covid, and I think it’s part of my personal responsibility to remind everyone that this virus kills: it doesn’t care how old you are. So this performance has a huge emotional importance for me. Perhaps it’s also a little opportunity for me to point out that the things I’m teaching are universal, not linked to any one genre of music. These “heavy metal” ideas are right into the modes I teach everyone at some point during your lessons, and the sounds are really quite sophisticated.
