1828: Schubert:  Fantasy in F minor for Piano Four Hands

This is just great, and the score shows that the music is not really hard. I could sight-read most of this. The point is that two fine musicians don’t have to play a lot of notes to make great music.

Piano four-hands…

This means two players at one piano. By the way, the pedal is always critical, and normally the person on the left does the pedal. For that reason, the person on the right almost always plays the melody, but normally the person on the left is the stronger player, or the better musician.

One of Schubert’s best…

This is not just a good piece for four-hands. It’s also great music and very fine writing. Music like this was very important for developing musicians when two people wanted to play together but there was only one piano.

The last year of his life…

He composed this in 1828, and it was the last year of his life. He only lived to age 31. Never has a musical genius been more cheated by a too-short life.

  1. This is a gem! The variations in tempo and dynamics sustained my interest.

Thank you for the information about piano four hands. I didn’t know that it means two people at the same piano and what each contributes to the performance..
